I had heard the episode count was low because Zach Braff wasn't very enthusiastic about going on for another season. The loss of any of the characters, much less the protagonist, would be a massive shock to the show dynamic.

That being said, Scrubs is your god. Bow down and obey. It's one of the few drama-dies that have been pulled off successfully, even if it focuses more on the comedic aspect.
