Thread: Stealing Huge Materia

  1. #1

    Default Stealing Huge Materia

    I never quite understood this.

I'll lay it all out to see if I'm missing something.

    1. Meteor is summoned and will kill most everything on the Planet.
    2. Shinra, an evil corporation, goes around collecting Huge Materia.
    3. The reason for this is to put the Huge Materia into a rocket and then launch the rocket into Meteor in hopes of destroying it and saving the world.
    4. The heroes, for no reason that is stated as far as I remember, go around and start stealing the Huge Materia.
    5. The rocket is thus less powerful when it crashes into Meteor.

Whether it would work or not is irrelevant because the "good guys" were purposefully destroying an option for saving humanity for...no reason.

    So, did I miss something?

Heroes also go around taking every item of value from people's houses. Theft, looting, pillaging... All part of standard hero work. Who cares if it endangers the world?
My friend Delzethin is currently running a GoFundMe account to pay for some extended medical troubles he's had. He's had chronic issues and lifetime troubles that have really crippled his career opportunities, and he's trying to get enough funding to get back to a stable medical situation. If you like his content, please support his GoFundMe, or even just contribute to his Patreon.

He can really use a hand with this, and any support you can offer is appreciated.

Yeah saving the world's not what being a hero is about. It's about fame, and in AVALANCHE's case, firey explosions.

Well if i remember when the team listened to Shinras plans, Barret was annoyed that more damage would be done to Corel, and Red said about eventually when materia grows it becomes one with the planet e.g. huge materia i think
The planet gets damaged when materia is sucked out by mako reactors so to take out huge materia would cause a lot fo damage and AVALANCHE wasnt just going to accept that the world would be destroyed, so they were waiting for Cloud to come back so they could come up with a plan, in the mean time they has to do whatever they could to help i guess

If I was like Cloud I don't think I would have taken that test.

I always thought that they knew it wouldn't work. The only thing that they knew would stop Meteor was Holy. Therefore they needed to kill Sephiroth, who was stopping Holy from destroying the Meteor.

On another note, I know they thought Shinra was wrong taking the Huge Materia from the planet, but once extracted why would they need to take it from Shinra? Very good question 'Forsaken Lover'. Does anyone wish to enlighten us?

    Balderdash!

Why do the characters have to justify their reasons, YOU are the one controlling them. Dont blame your puppets when they poke some kids eye out you dirty materia thief. If you think its wrong then don't take the materia. Its optional, leave it in the space ship, when you have to enter the code. Let it crash into meteor. Go on, it doesnt make any more damage anyway, and you wouldve lost a giant chunk of the earths lifestream.

The reason given in the game is that Huge Materia is just too valuable to waste on a probably-futile attempt to destroy Meteor. Those materia are repositories of vast amounts of knowledge and power from the past, and simply blowing them up would be an injustice.
That, and the damage that Shinra were prepared to cause in order to secure the Huge Materia.

Nonetheless, I agree that this was a part of the game that didn't really help the plot much. Sort of like a tacked-on side plot, rather than a good contribution to the overall story.
Still, there are a lot of nice character moments throughout the mission, especially what it adds to Cid's story.

The only thing I didn't like was that no one forces you to get them.

What I mean is, that if you fail to get any of the Huge Materia, there is no real effect. Also it's obvious that for the one on the Rocket the designers forgot to inclued both opition.

I'm not sure what you mean there... the blue Huge Materia can be left behind on the rocket, can't it? If you fail to enter the code in time, I mean.
Though I can't remember if there's a time limit or not

I mean that the games script seams to only follow what would happen if you left the HM on the rocket.

It says; "the Shinra plan failed" or something, assuming that the Materia was on the rocket.

Hmm, I remember that part - "Rufus' and the others plan was a failure..."
Maybe the rocket had more materia onboard than just the four Huge Materia the team tries to recover. Maybe conventional explosives and whatnot as well.

Remember though when you listened to Shinras plans they mentioned they had already raided the Nibelheim reactor, or was that the one you took from the rocket? i cant remeber

If I was like Cloud I don't think I would have taken that test.

    Good point - let's do a tally...

    Reactors:

    Corel

    Condor

    Mt Nibel

    Undersea

Midgar (x5, since Sector 8 is unfinished and Avalanche bombed two others)

Assuming they took Huge Materia from Midgar's reactors and already had some in stock (it was used to make ammo for the Junon Cannon, if I remember right), then there must've been a lot of materia already aboard the rocket.

Plus if you noticed in the FMV of the Midgar cannon firing, Reactor 1 and 5 were both giving the cannon mako energy, so maybe there were fixed

Yeah, I wondered about that one... I guess the bombing didn't seal off the main energy flow from underground (Cait Sith says something about this, actually) so they were still able to use the reactor as a power source for the cannon.
