Smile Sequels to older FF games.

Today SE has announced its mobile-phone exclusive sequel to Final Fantasy IV.

Final Fantasy IV Official Sequel Announced. . .for CELL PHONES. Megaton, no--POOPTON - NeoGAF

The new way of making quick money, make sequels to games that were never intended to have sequels! I think what I'm feeling about this announcement is the same people who hate the VII-compilation felt.

Let's hope they won't do this to V and VI, shall we? Unless there are people who actually like the idea? Each to his own, but to me, this is just... no. Too much is too much, and this is too much. And people actually thought remaking these games equals milking. XD

    What do you guys think?

(Ps: I know this is more about IV's sequel, but I'm asking what people think in general of sequels to FF I-VI, which is why I placed this here. Move if necesary.)

If FF VI ever has a sequal, it won't even be an RPG.

You won't even use the characters from the first.

It will be a World Building Sim.

You know, growing trees, building memorials to the heroes, building the towns back up.

    I'd buy it.

Though a piece of me would also die since they are now whoring out my precious FF VI to great extents.

    But I'd still buy it.

What the hell is the obsession with phone games.

It is not a good idea.

First of all, the only people who really seem to have a problem with the FFVII-compilation games are the people who don't like FFVII to begin with.

I mentioned in the RW thread that most FF fans loathe the ideas of sequels, in some part because at the end of the game, after defeating the ultimate evil, there's really nothing out there that could pose a threat. However, Revenant Wings is an amazing game and it far exceeds any expectations I could have had for it.

This game apparently (according to the forum you listed) says it revolves around "theodore" a descendant of cecil... it could be interesting. But I don't play mobile phone games and I'm assuming US phones haven't caught up to Japan yet, so I'm not really phased by it. Let's just wait before more details arise before the moody-FF-elitist mass-suicides begin.

It just seems strange you know. I don't really have a problem with sequels most of the time, but making a sequel to a 15 year old game? That's kinda milking it for all it's worth. Release a new XIII game for all I care, or some new info about XIII at least, but this?

FF IV rules, and it's kinda cool to get a semi-sequel to it. But it's for cellphones and it may not be as good and as necessary.

Square Enix keeps making random sequels, prequels, midquels, and spinoffs to tons of games! Sometimes they aren't necessary but sometimes they rule(FF XII: RW)!

I'll buy this game when it's out in Usa.

The point is that I don't see where FF IV needs a sequel. What part of the story has a huge plothole that needs to be covered with a sequel? What evil remains? Sure Zeromus said he would never perish, but Necron said the same, so go ahead SE, make FF IX-2: The return of Necron. Just seems like a quick-cash in, and that's kinda were my problem lies. IV story concluded completely, why does it need a sequel, especially when none of the original cast may even show up? One could argue VII needed a sequel (granted, the ending sucked IMHO), or X, or XII. But IV... I dunno. Oh well...

Yeah. I would've said that even XII lended itself to a sequel more than IV did. I doubt I'll play it, I'll be interested to look at it but I think that's about as far as I'd be willing to go. There's no real need for a sequel, but there's a need for the company to make money because it's a business, at the end of the day.

Yea, I think it may be better for some games with no sequels, some maybe can get sequels. I don't know what I want!

It's not about 'needing' a sequel. It's about making a fun game that people can enjoy. The whole 'selling out' concept doesn't really apply to videogames, despite what certain people might say to supplement an argument.

You can make a fun game without it needing to be a sequel to a game that doesn't need one. Instead of making a IV sequel to be released soon, they might as well release a FNC game.

Mobile games are a nice thing to pass time on buses and stuff when they're actually good, like DOOM, but they're not exactly something you can sit down and really get into. Nevertheless this had better be good, and it had better come out in the UK. Which it never will.

I happen to know FFVII fans that hate the spins-off, so it's not true that all those who hate spins-off are people who don't like FFVII. Heck, I like FFVII (not my favourite, granted, but it's not at the bottom of the list), and I don't see a point in all those sequels and prequels besides making money.

Yes, I know, Square-Enix is a company, and companies make money, and yadda yadda. Instead of spending so much time and money on all those spins-off, why don't they use it to make new stuff instead? Like a Chrono game, for example? Or something completely original that is not FF and will awe us all? Or at least, port or remake some of their older titles. Seiken Densetsu III anyone? I'd love to play that game on my DS or a console instead of the (illegal) emulator on my crappy computer.

Yes, I realise it's ironic to dislike sequels and prequels, but not the ports and remakes. They both exist to make money, but at least the ports and remakes allows some gamers who never played the originals in the past to experience them. Or the oldbies to relive the experience and get the warm, fuzzy nostalgia feeling.

I like FFVII. I liked Advent Children, but purely as an action movie. I hate the story though because although the story warranted a sequel, it was a big mess of crap in the end. I also hate the rest of the compilation of FFVII, but that's because I hate unnecessary spin offs, especially when the games themselves are complete crap. I doubt I'd have a problem with FFXII: RW since the story was left pretty open in some ways, and it seems to actually be a good game, but I don't own a DS.

I do have a problem with this game though since FFIV is the last game in the series that really needed a sequel, and since the game itself likely won't live up to the original at all. I have no problem with the idea of making sequels if they want, but they need to stop half-assing most of them, and make sure they originals actually warrant them.

All that said, although I don't like them making an FFIV sequel, I won't begrudge Square for making it, or anyone else for wanting to play it. I vote for what I like and don't like with my money, and if it ever sees a release in some form that North Americans can play, I'll show my support for it by not buying it.
