I agree entirely. It certainly would've been an interesting path for the film to take but I don't think that by and large people would've liked that. However, BoB, (SPOILER)I suppose the fact that Rob went to such lengths to find the girl (a quest I actually thought would end with him finding her dead body) shows another side of human behaviour about how people will become obsessed with finding someone they care about. The reality of the situation goes completely out the window because other things decline in relative importance. And I think that after their relationship developed to an all new level in the month preceding the incident itself, it was important to Rob not to leave a loose end and that - despite having not acted terribly well towards her - he did, ultimately care. An ridiculously unselfish gesture to 'save' her certainly but one that illustrated an important point.
