i've been RPing since the Atari2600 (Adventure anyone) and Sega Master System (Phantasy Star, Y's) and still find Midgar one of my favorite parts of FFVII... the only part i didn't like because of the tedium is the Training House in Sector7, so much dialogue to go through, i just don't do it anymore except to get the few free items you get for starting the tutorial... after i've been through the training house a good half dozen times i just don't wanna do it again... when i first played FFVII and started in Midgar i was like "allright this isn't gonna suck like a lot of other RPGs because it's gonna be all SteamPunk" at least when i got out of Midgar it didn't seem too much like D&D upon hitting the world map, and kept a lot of the SteamPunk feel... that's the only problem i have with most RPGs is that they try too hard to emulate D&D, so seeing Midgar was very refreshing...

I actually like the beginning of the game. I like the whole deal with you having to sort of break out of the prison-like city of Midgar.. and then you get to explore the world.

I didnt even think we'd be leaving midgar when i first played it. It was quite a suprise when it seemed the game had only just begun

If you didn't play FF7 when it came out for the first time, until a few laters later, (you played some superior PS games) then obviously you would find some parts in FF7 boring. If you played FF7 as your first PS gaming expierence, then you would find it more fun.

Actually, FF VII was my first PS RP. Yet I still find it a Mediocer Game. Fun to play, but nothing special.

    Except Cid. He rocks.

There's quite a few games where I compare a certain opening section to "getting out of Midgar".

Arlia and Salva in Star Ocean 2, getting the Cut HM in Pokemon Blue, Completing the Great Deku Tree in Zelda, the list goes on.

I like Midgar. You start out with set objectives in a fairly small, but still quite well developed, world. You blow up a couple reactors, fight your way up through the city to the HQ, get ready for a fight against the arch nemesis who's destroying the planet and then, boom, you get tossed out into the world map. It's just a great feeling when you get through it and step out into the world beyond.
My friend Delzethin is currently running a GoFundMe account to pay for some extended medical troubles he's had. He's had chronic issues and lifetime troubles that have really crippled his career opportunities, and he's trying to get enough funding to get back to a stable medical situation. If you like his content, please support his GoFundMe, or even just contribute to his Patreon.

He can really use a hand with this, and any support you can offer is appreciated.

I acually found the beginning one of the best aspects of the game. The motorcycle riding part is a perfect end to something sort of a prologue.

Although I have to admit, I think the opening sequence and mission in VII is the greatest RPG intro of all time.
I second that. It's right behind FFVIII's cinematic intro for me. The first time I watched that, I was floored. It was so beautifully epic.

I really enjoyed Midgar, it was probably one of my favourite locations in the game. I've always found dystopias to be very interesting and I think the dark, lifeless and fairly scummy aspects of Midgar make it seem rather like one. I thought the Shinra were decent enough villains and quite enjoyed the battle against them in their stronghold. To each their own, I suppose.
Not my words Carol, the words of Top Gear magazine.

In '97, especially having played RPGs in the "SNES Era", that was pretty amazing, at the time.
