If I remember right, there are small amounts of ice at places on Mars. It actually has polar ice caps, too, but they're dry ice - solid carbon dioxide, not water ice.

The 'canals' were long, straight lines that appeared to crisscross the planet's surface, but those were actually an optical illusion caused by older types of telescope.
