The Pandora is a time machine.It taked our characters to the past.In fact the events happening on the castle are happening near the Trabia Crater(original place of the castle) but it is concealed by the Pandora´s walls.It happened when Laguna made his movie.
That is the symbolic meaning of the "dragon and sorceress" thingy and the "this dragon isn´t fake" thing.
Square is trying to tell us that while Laguna is making this movie similar real events are happening inside the pandora.
In fact the three portals are the three elevators of the Pandora.The elevators path converges to each other as they go up.
That answers the argument about the portals seeming to be closer than the elevators.
These elevators are also Time machines.
