Miriel, what I do is carry a glass of water. When that conversation comes up, I throw it in their face. People called me Japanese when I first came to this country 23 years ago.

What's particularly bizarre to me is when people speak to me in mandarin.

I'm not sure where I want to start when critiquing the whole notion of categorizing a person by their geographical ancestry. We all came from what is now known as Africa, but I'd think twice before trying to convince certain friends of mine that I'm 'part African'. Obviously I'm trying to get across the notion that we're all humans and categorizing by geography is beyond silly. This is complicated by my general disgust for any sort of nationalism. I tell people I'm Canadian only for their ease, not mine. I couldn't possibly care less what your particular ancestry is. I of course respect your freedom to care what your ancestry is.

It seems this thread has incited yet another attack on my attempt to rectify my own issues with growing up in this country. Bravo, I say, geniunely, with no sarcasm.

Well I'm mostly of Irish and German decent. A little bit of French in there, but I don't get mistaken for anything. I'm from America and I'm as pale as can be.

I get mistaken for a lot of things, going with my looks I often get mistaken for Greek, quite possibly because I have dark hair and lots of it. I also live in an area of London full of greek families so when you see a dark haired, hairy guy the instinct says Greek. I've also had Italian or other things, though always from the Med area.

My voice has had me mistaken for a lot of things:

South African - a big black south african guy made this comment, I chose not to argue with him as he was a very angry man who was being nice to me because he believed me to be also south african.
American - even when I am not doing my american accent which is surprisingly accurate, when I speak to people on xbox live they tend to believe this even when I tell them I am actually english.
Austrailian - I have no idea where to begin my aussie accent sucks
New Zealander - Again no idea where to begin
Eastern European - No speciffic country was given I found it ironic because I have the least eastern european accent I know.
Canadian - People in England often have difficulties telling the americans and canadians apart by voice alone.
Irish - well I do an accurate impression of one but this was purely from me being drunk in a pub and asking a girl if she had a light who replied "I don't like irish guys." before walking off

I really find it silly especially because I tend to get told by a lot of my friends how posh my voice sounds.

I have people say I look extremely British and others who say I look slightly Japanese. I've been to foreign countries and straight away they've spoke to us in English, once we went into a pub in Spain, and my Dad ordered something and the guy was all "So are you from St Helens?". It was an English pub though and it turned out that the guy himself was from St Helens too.

People automatically assume that because I live within Merseyside that I'm a scouser.

Someone once asked my friend if I was Jewish.

    Unfortunately, she said no.

People usually ask me first and then I tell them so I wouldn't really know

I got mistaken for being Australian once. I've made my peace with getting mistaken for an Irishman by the ignorant masses, but I really never expected to be called an Aussie.

A lot of people mistake the English for being Australian and vice-versa, but Scottish?

To be fair the person was Cuban, he interrupted my meal with an interesting guitar solo performance and wouldn't let me leave until I tipped him. For some reason he thought guessing my nationality would make me want to tip him more.

No they say "You're a Filipino". Though I think one time, they thought I was a kid, when I was already 20. Dang I hate being short...

I'm English, although I have some Irish and Scottish blood in me as well. Not much though, but my family line is a mixture of English, Irish and Scottish.

I don't tend to get mistaken for anything other than English due to my strong accent.

People think I'm not from around where I'm from because I speak very clearly. :yuck:

People rarely wonder where I come from, or what race I am. I'm very obviously anglo, and I will tell them that I am Texan before they can ask.
