I'd personally try to avoid paying extra for Office and McAfee. Not worth the cost. Seems like a pretty good laptop overall, though a 6-cell battery seems a little small. I think my laptop has a 12-cell, but it's also older and it's likely a tier battery.

Oh this is the laptop for one of the law schools that I'm really considering... last year's anyway, and they said that this year would be pretty similar. If I decide to get a laptop with the school, it comes with all that junk and a 3 year warranty.

£300, or maybe $500-$600 Laptops of that spec are so cheap these days you can probably ignore the software or other crap bundled and remove it yourself after getting it as necessary

dialup modem is useful as standard in laptops for me, I sometimes use it as a backup/backdoor to get in As long as all the other more decent connectivity methods like wireless/ethernet is there as well, nothing wrong with this bonus

Not Bad * Dell Latitude D630 with 2.00GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 processor
Should be 3 considering how bloated vista is* 2GB DDR2-667 SDRAM
    A little small* 1440 x 900 14.1" WXGA+ TFT LCD color display
Integrated = passable* Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
They couldn't spring for a 7200 RPM?* 120GB 5400 RPM hard disk drive
Weak* 6-cell/56 WHr Lithium-Ion battery (1 year warranty)
    Good!* 10/100/1000 Ethernet LAN
Good* Dell TrueMobile 1490 WLAN (802.11a/g, 54Mbps) MiniPCI card
    * Dell Wireless 360 Bluetooth Module
    * 56K v.92 internal modem
Could have put in a 16 speed ;_;* 8XDVD+/-RW drive
Weak! Mega Weak!* 1 GB USB Flash Drive

    Software (preloaded):

Ugh XP Why not home premium or Ultimate?* Microsoft Windows Vista Business Edition
Sweet?* Microsoft Office 2007 Enterprise Edition
Why word perfect? didn't they just give you office?* Corel WordPerfect Office X3 Academic
Okay. At least it is something* McAfee VirusScan

Let me see what I can find that is comparable.

CDW Product Overview: Sony VAIO® BX740NS6 - $1150 without office and those other programs.

Due to this being through a school they probably have a deal with whoever is giving out the computers. So they probably get the OS, Vista and other stuff at more of a discount but that is also probably offset by the 3 year warrenty anyway.

I put the computer at $1000. It might be worth less(but not much less) by the time you start school with quad processors on the way.

    CDW Product Overview: Acer TravelMate 5720-6969 - Core 2 Duo T7300 2 GHz - 15.4" TFT

$1000...I hate sony so much XD

    Bigger HDD.
    Bigger screen
    3 year standard warranty
Vista Business(with a downgrade to XP Pro)

The only thing you are missing is Office but there is Open office and since you are a student there is probably some discount you can get through your school for a cheaper Office than if you were to buy it at retail.
