Fix my PS2!

Through the internet fix my PS2 now! I'm waiting.

Seriously though, my PS2 is having problems. For awhile it wouldn't play DVDs and then stopped with PS1 games. Now it's having problems with PS2 games. Once it gets started it plays them no problem. However it is getting started that has the problem. When I go into the Browser menu when the game doesn't start automatically and close the game thing, the "Reading Disk" message flashed twice and stops. That's what it does with DVDs and PS1 games. I'd like to fix it before it becomes an expensive paperweight. I dunno if it makes a difference or not, but I have the fat one. I had it for a few years before the anoriexic PS2 came out.

You've got the dreaded disc read error that was all the rage in 2002-2003, I suppose, a variety of solutions to which have been posted across the internet. I'm sure there are some old threads in the Help forum that could point you in the right direction.

It is a very useful guide if you do not mind do-it-yourself type of deal. You'll need a Philip's Screwdriver and a Jeweler's (or really small Philip's) as well. I'd suggest you read the article a few times over and check that you have everything before attempting it yourself. Also, some models come apart differently but it mostly works. Mine was slightly different from the one they use.

BTW THIS VOIDS THE WARRANTY ON YOUR PS2! ATTEMPT AT YOUR OWN RISK! There is a little sticker in the back corner you have to peel off to separate it. If that sticker is removed or cut or w/e the warranty is voided.

mine did that i sent it in and they fixed it (only cost me 11$ in shipping) and it worked great til i tripped on the cables and it fell to the floor, knocking the drive tray loose at that point i decided to tear it a part and see if i could re set the tray my self. long story short i electrocuted myself smashed the dvd drive and went and used part of my tax return to buy a slim. the bigass one is still right here next to the computer, the piece i tore off the disk drive stuffed in the expansion slot.

so you can call sony and bitch and they should fix it for free as long as you dont mind a month without ps2. (no biggey, play pc watch porn whatever....) you could get a used ps2 for 100$, actually i think you can buy a new ps2 for that much

Mine had that problem. Audio went out of sync on PS1 games. Then PS2 games suddenly looked like crap and had realy horrible sound. I never tried a DVD during this time. I basically shelved the system for about six months and started to really miss PS2 games and a few that I wanted to play had been released. So... I decided to buy a new one. But figured I might as well check mine out one last time. And while setting it up (upright) I accidently knocked it over. And when I fired it up it worked... So I'm guessing the lense was out of alignment. And I magically knocked it back in place. So yeah. Beat up your PS2. It'll work

I've fixed several PS2s by realigning the laser myself (and wrecked one).

I wrecked it because I accidentally dropped it on the ground while it was open, but while it's a relatively easy process to fix the alignment, it's also easy to break something while poking around in there, so don't tug on things and stuff.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I followed that guide you put up and it plays DVDs now.

On a kind of related note, I downloaded ePSXe. I test runned with Digimon World and there was no sound in opening cutscenes. The music and sounds work in the actual game so I'm not worried about it, but any suggestions for that? Also, is there a way to get my memory card data from the PS2 over to the computer. One of the reason I switched to emulator is cause those memory cards are old and data goes missing.

You should play with the settings in your sound plugin in ePSXe, or use a different plugin altogether. One that I've never had trouble with (and has always produced the most accurate sound) is EternalSPU. You can get any plugin at <a href="http://www.ngemu.com">NGEmu</a>.

As for getting data ove to your computer from your memory card, you'd need to buy an adapter, as far as I know. I don't think there's a way to get the data via USB or anything like that.
