I looked at the site a while ago but forgot to comment in this thread.

The art style and backstory for them is all pretty interesting. How popular are these comics in Arab countries? Is there any sort of controversy surrounding them or are they pretty well accepted?

They are very popular in the Arab world. The only "controversy" is the covering up of female body parts, and this only occurs in Saudi Arabia; the other countries accept it as is.
