Thread: Do you know your music?

1. #1

Thumbs up Do you know your music?

I want you to tell me a song which has a lot of meaning. And when I say meaning, I don't mean any old meaning... I mean the 'Imagine' by John Lennon type song meaning. Then I want to know a song that means something to you, meaning being moving.

The song name PLUS the lyrics/ link would be nice.

Ok, thanks in advance!

'If I Had' by Eminem is great, because it was written before he got a record contract, and he literally had no money, couldn't keep a job and had a baby to look after. He raps about how even if he had the chance to make it all better he knew he would just waste it.

Sadie by Alkaline Trio.

It's about Susan Atkins, nicknamed Sadie Glutz by Charlie Manson. The end quote "He represented a God to me That was so beautiful that I'd do anything for him. I'd do anything for god. Even murder, if I believed it was right. How could it not be right if it was done with love? I have no remorse for doing what was right to me. I have no guilt in me" was in her statement referring to how she felt about Charlie and the crimes she claimed she had no option in partaking in. If you have the chance, read Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry. It's about the Manson murders. Great book and great song.
You hold my heart in your manly hands I wanna feel the throb of your handsome gland. I wanna hold you tight like a newborn kitten, against my flesh like a cashmere mitten. Tickly tick, I'm makin' skin bump heaven and all the way down it's lookin' cleanly shaven. Prickety pricks, it's stubble on stubble I better slow down or I'm in real trouble. Want you, touch you, feel you, taste you! Knick knack whacky whack 'till I see the man stew. spin you around let me see that hole! I'm a tunnelin' in a like a short hair mole. Once I'm inside I'm gonna leave a trace, half in there and half on that face! One finger, two finger, there fingers gone! Mano a mano I love you John!

Anything by Coldplay (my fave band) usually has a good meaning.
I especially like "Lost" of their new album, which begins- "just because am losing, doesen't mean am lost" some people find their songs to be depressing, personally i find them very uplifting, and always cheer me up cool idea for a thread by the way :P

In the two consecutive songs Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days (Wings Pt. 2) by Tool, Maynard questions the faith that his mother placed in God after she died approximately 10,000 days after being paralysed and confined to a wheelchair. It's a very emotional song and if you site there and listen to it carefully, you can notice marked transitions between different styles and intensities of the music and lyrics - each "section" of the song represents a different emotion.

A line allows progress, a circle does not-Bright Eyes

The song discusses the changing of a close friend doing drugs. The title symbolizes this because the title isn't spoken in the song at all (I believe) but it makes sense because the character discussed in a "circle of drugs", no progress, but a line does condone progress...Yeah.

Can you tell us any meanings to the songs?

"Crucifixion" by Phil Ochs is the most fascinating song I've ever heard. He wrote it for John F. Kennedy, but it never mentions Kennedy by name, and ultimately has come to be about Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, Christ, John Lennon, and heroes in general. Humankind revels in its ability to slaughter its heroes. It's a fascinating concept to think about, and the song's imagery and alliteration is incredible.

"Dance, dance, dance, teach us to be true. Dance, dance, dance, 'cause we love you."

"Excitement is ecstatic, passion places bets. Gracefully he bows to ovations that he gets. But the hands are applauding are slippery with sweat, and saliva is falling from their smiles."

"First a smile of rejection at the nearness of the night; truth becomes a tragedy limping from the light. All the heavens are horrified, they stagger from the sight, as the cross is trembling with desire."

Sleep by Godspeed You! Black Emperor

No lyrics, but has a personal connection to me beyond what human language can adequately describe.

The song "Hi no hikari sae todokanai kono basho de" by Miyavi is very inspiring and full of emotion.

Since you can tell by the title that the song is in Japanese, I'll post a translation and a video with subs on it here.

Looking up to the skies
of this place where the sun doesn't shine
Without blinking, I tried following
the fast-forwarded motion of the clouds

It was terrifying, when I close my eyes
everything seems to turn into lies
And the wind crying out,
as it seems to put the torn pieces of clouds together

Then all of a sudden, it's as if I'm blown away
But a little shake is nothing.

As long as I keep my eyes forward
and push on straight ahead
without stumbling on my way, if I do that
one day I'll probably be able to catch up with those clouds too.

/well, that's some of the lyrics, but I'll let you watch the video to see the rest and interpret it yourself.

Wings is a smurfing amazing song. Any time I sit down with headphones and really listen to it, I find myself completely blown away.

I also wanted to mention the song Lithium, by Evanescence. Some people may find it kind of hokey, but I don't care. The song is about having been depressed for so long that it's almost addicting, to point that the thought of being happy is almost terrifying simply because it's different. It's about clinging to depression because it's the only thing that feels real. I think the studio version of the song is a little over the top, but listening to the raw emotion in the acoustic version really gets to me.

It's hardly comparable with a song like Wings, but is a song I can relate to nonetheless.

I agree, though I find 10,000 Days to be more emotional, personally.

Slightly off topic, but if you haven't tried it already, play Viginti Tres followed by Wings For Marie, at the same time as 10,000 Days. It's pretty cool.

This first song I'm probably going to get a lot of crap for saying, but meh, screw you all.

YouTube - Welcome To The Black Parade lyrics

Yep, it's MCR - The Black Parade. Only one of their Albums I actually like.

But the song itself actually has a really good message. When a person important to you passes on, you need to pick up all the pieces and carry on, cause even though they are gone their memory will live on within you.

This next one is truly an amazing song.

YouTube - Cowboy Bebop ~ Gotta Knock a Little Harder

It brings a tear to my eye due to it's epicness. I always took this song as being the struggle for a person who has emotionally shut themselves down to recover, and that the longer they remained distant, the harder it is to lift yourself from that state.
