Don't listen to him.
Unlimited bandwidth is a common trick among hosts; what that means is 'hey we'll say you can use a whole bunch, but we're going to assume that you'll never use it, and if you do use it, well we put a clause in our 12 page long EULA that you should've read and now we're going to charge you for all that bandwidth'
An EoFFer is actually trying out the hosting business, and he's got a moral disgust for those kinds of tricks (do a google search for 'overselling') and it's pretty cheap as well. It's pretty cheap as far as hosts go. He is at
Calindora » Home » Web Hosting . I think jojo is hosting with him right now, so you could ask her what her thoughts are.
For the ones I've used myself, the last two were fairly good.
Host Excellence
A Small Orange - Web Hosting, Software and more! (this one is what I'm using right now)
Anyways these are just how you get your webspace. If you want a domain name, sometimes you can have the company register one for you (but if you do that, the unscrupulous ones that do things like overselling will register it in their names instead of yours which could cause trouble if you want to take your domain name elsewhere), but there's several reliable registrars for that also.
Complete Web Solutions: domains, hosting, site builders and SSL. seems to be more reputable than it was several years ago, but I still use
Namecheap.com - Domain name registration, renewal and transfers - Cheap SSL Certificates - Web Hosting - Free URL Forwarding, Free e-mail forwarding and Free DNS services are included with our cheap domain registration service
I think ICANN just agreed to raise the price of .com and .net domain names, so those prices will be going up soon, but what can you do?
Oh, and you'll want to get an ftp client for your site :]
The best thing to remember about buying bandwidth is that 1) you're always going to start small
2) they LOVE it when you buy more, so you can always upgrade -.- even if it's not at a convenient time
