It's probably going to be something mundane (relatively speaking), but I'd be cool if it were the Voyager 1 probe. It was launched in 1955, so I guess scientists could have been looking for it for over 50 years.

The words "<i>discovery of an object in our Galaxy</i>" don't really lend themselves to my hypothesis though.
