I was pretty lucky and only had a removable retainer for about six months. My teeth weren't great to begin with but they seemed to fix themselves pretty quickly, so I didn't have to suffer the indignity of train tracks.
The only time I've worn braces was when I tried to fit in on my trip to Scandinavia, and those were the braces you attach to your trousers.
