Thread: Useless Skills

  1. #1

    Default Useless Skills

Anyone notice how there are a lot of abilities in FFT that are just totally not worth the JP? For example, Meteor costs (I believe) 1500 JP. But once you get it, it takes forever to cast and takes a lot of MP and hits your party members. Totally not worth it, to me. Prettymuch all of Cloud's Soldier stuff is the same way. It takes a while and doesn't do that much damage.

    Anyone think of any others?

Most of the Knight's abilities work on a "need to know who or what's in the next battle" basis. Given the way I like to play games, that's only fun on the second play through for me, and not the first. I prefer more of a "generally ready for anything" approach to games on the first run.

Thief skills are kinda mediocre too, but the class itself is useful for opening other classes up.

There are some movement abilities I've never used:

Move on Lava: Helps in one one lousy battlefield and that's it.

Any Weather: While it's true that weather affects elemental magic I've never noticed that much of a difference.

As for Cloud I don't use his upper limits much although Finish Touch causes some nice status ailments.

Fly - Less useful than teleport, on a harder to aquire class, and costs more.

The Jump movement abilities, also the majority of the Dragoon Horizontal and vertical abilities since you only need the higher ones. I've also never cared for the Aim abilities the Archers use...

I always found most of the Mediator's skills to be rather pointless. I wouldn't say useless, as they obviously have a use, but you can get by in the game just fine without them, and there are better classes to play as.

yeah, but mediators were surprisingly powerful with a gun in hand, and if you ever got close to somebody, you could always con them into switching sides or tease them cos they're fat i liked the mediator, even though a lot of their skills aren't very good, as you said.

i'm more of a power person than a strategy person...my team is full of ninjas and summoners (who aren't actually that powerful ) and black mages and dark knights (FFT: WoTL), rather than oracles and time mages (time magic has got to be one of my favourite kinds, but a person is wasted when that's all they can do...especially if they can't reach the enemy)...

it's been said before, but fly is the biggest waste of JP in the whole game...it's worse than teleport, doesn't have much of a range, and the cost on WoTL is 5000 friggin' JP! i could master like, 12 ninjas with that amount not to mention it's not that easy getting JP for a Bard because all the good moves take 10 turns to cast...
I also never liked the geomancer much, they have some pretty good moves and status side-effects, and they're versatile, but they're moves are generally weak and the status effects hardly ever work

That's all i can think of right now but mark my words, i'll be back with more

Geomancers are probably one of the most overlooked classes in the game because people fail to equip them properly. Yeah, give them some basic sword, normal clothing, maybe +attack glove? Worthless. Rune Blade, Aegis Shield, Magic Gauntlet, Flask Hat, etc, and have them leveled as a blackmage or summoner for most the game. Get to lv 99, turn them into a Geomancer, give them nothing but +MA gear, and watch their long range, free-costing, status-inducing attacks hit multiple targets for 150-200 dmg each. Think Orlandu or Agrias, with a little less POW, and a little more range and status effect variations.

At one point I made a team of nothing but Geomancers. By the end of the game, most battles were over before the enemy even got into attacking range.

I think that many of the Movement Skills were under utilized because of the lack of diversity in battlefields. Lavawalking, Waterwalking, Swim, and Fly all serve a similar purpose by allowing the user to cross terrain more quickly; Lavawalking and Waterwalking, however, allow the user to stand on top of the normally unusable terrain, yet this does not come with enough benefits to justify continued use.

Am I the only one who has never used Equip Axe?

I never did either. It's not that Axes are useless, it's just they are so random in damage dealt.

I hardly ever used any of Equip skills. I mean, I'd maybe use Equip Armor for one fight to give some weak person more HP, but that was about it. Like, with my final best line-up, I can assure you, no one has an Equip Skill in their support slot.

I might use the Equip Skills only when dealing with special characters so I can use their Original class abilities. Cid, Agrias, and Beowulf. I also like using guns better than Bows or Crossbows... Other than than that, they are pretty useless. Though Brawler is nice...

I agree. I thought that the Equip skills were good for diversifying the skillset of a special character, but I felt that they were useless in an optimal build of a generic character.

Quite a few useful skills were made "useless" in a sense in War of the Lions. The more powerful summons are take a lot more JP and longer to cast, so much so, that Short Charge doesn't really make the difference it used to. And Zodiac is way hard to learn now+ slower like the rest.
Really cut down my use of summoners which I generally favor.
