I think that XIII should focus on the aspects that make Final Fantasy unique.
You mean big changes to the gameplay with just about every installment? :P

Will FFXIII continue on the "More sidequests are better" approach and try to put so much in that it will take 300 or even 400 hours to reach a point to where you've completed the majority of the major sidequests?
well, just look at the game Lost odysee on the 360, it took 4 DVD for 10s of hour of gameplay.

Considering that the final fantasy games takes well over 50 hours, plus the extras, this one may even take up more than 1 BD aka. Blue-Ray Disc.

I think any chance of FF XIII being too big has gone out the window at this point.

I heard Lost Odyssey was only so big because there was a lot of movies

At this level of graphics, I'd have to question the necessity of CG movies when you can get the same thing with comparable quality out of the in-game engine anymore

And these days I'd kind of prefer it that way. CG cut scenes sort of pull you out of the game. In-game scenes keep with the flow and feel and blend everything naturally. And I've always preferred them no matter how limiting the hardware

Simple text conversations in FFVI had more lasting appeal than any of the flashy CG scenes they pasted in there on the PS1 release

I'm hoping to be able to play Final Fantasy XIII for atleast 150 hours to get a 100% completion rate. I'm ready for committment to this game! !!!

Currently playing: Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift, Final Fantasy I
Will play next: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Mass Effect, Fallout 3(???)
