They don't, though. Only if you take a very abstract look at their roles - Luke and Vaan being as different as can be - and if you ignore the fact that many of them are established Final Fantasy tropes as well. "A man with a sword" hardly makes one the same as the other. You could just as easily argue that Star Wars is a rip-off of The Bible or The Lord of the Rings...

Bhujerba's leadership was secretly in charge of the resistance all along, and was appearing to 'play all sides' for political and economic expedience. Cloud City, suspended in the atmosphere of a gas giant planet, was a truly neutral outpost that'd sell to all comers.
