Before, there was a long process to get a TLD, and that's why we didn't have very many. (especially compared to the "real" part of a domain, the eyesonff for example). Recently, however, ICANN had been approving a lot of (some thought) silly TLDs that didn't have a lot of room for wide spread usage.
Apparently they're REALLY into this, because now they've decided that so long as you have enough money, you can make your own TLD. you could do neskaya.jojo, monkey.fun etc
