Even though you said not to, I'm going to go ahead and recommend another player:
foobar2000, a free no-nonsense player, super easy on CPU and memory. It's extensible using an SDK so there are lots of plugins and themes. The SDK language is very easy to learn if you want to create your own theme or modify existing themes. Attached is my current setup.
