It's just ファイガ (Figa) and ファイジャ (Fija), actually.

Didn't they start using more syllables starting with FFVIII? Or did they still continue to just use four characters?

It's the same as ever. "Firaga" and "Firaja" are inventions of the localization staff.

Same deal with Cure, really. In Japan, it's Curega, not Curaga, for example.
