That's one explanation.

Mine however is different: I've said plenty of times before that I don't like FFVII and I see no reason to have a remake of it. It already gets too much attention as it is. The only way I'd ever justify a remake is if you correct all of the mistakes and fill in the plot holes in the original story-- but that wouldn't really make it FFVII anymore at that point, if you ask me.

Also, I have the same opinion of 80% of the FFVII fanbase as I do 100% of the Naruto fanbase (Believe it!). A remake would cause a boost in fandom, thus also boosting the obsession and never-shutting-the-hell-uppiness significantly. It's a petty reason, really, but it's more than enough exasperation than it's worth.
