Italian mafia doesn't have nearly as great influence on government as Japanese Yakuza. Japanese Yakuza has several different competing families which have major influence on the government and economy. They all have bad ass tattoos and missing fingers which scare people around them less, and their traditions are thousands of years older. Also, they were able to provide relief faster than the police during major natural disasters.

Though discrimination was officially done away with after the Meiji restoration, a lot of that prejudice still remained - many yakuza could have cared less about the type of person as long as they got a productive member for the group.

I realize this sounds silly, and while it wasn't to a great extent, it was an "upside" of the yakuza. (Oh, and it's true.) Otherwise this is mostly romanticized.
