What your friend doesn't understand is that doing a butterfly and freestyle stroke are equivalent to doing the 100m dash and triple jump; they're very different mechanics that engage different muscles. You can see this when you watch Phelps swim. His chest raises a great deal out of the water one one side of his freestyle stroke, this being due to his butterfly training, which is his prime stroke. It's hard to train your body to be efficient in two different strokes, thus his primary stroke shows through. That's why IMs are so impressive, as the people have to learn and master four strokes. When you watch and IM, you'll hear the announcers talking about how "This is so-and-so's strong stroke".
Also, a lot of people don't realize that the difference between a 100m swim and a 200m swim is equivalent to a 200m sprint and an 800m or so run. They're trying to directly equate swimming distances to running distances and it just doesn't work.
