Depends on what the smilie is. For generic emotions I've been using text smilies more often as of late, but some gifs like are irreplacable.

Depends on the images used for smilies. EoFF has comparably good ones, so here I generally prefer images. Images are usually also preferable for more complex emotions (like or ).

Shi and tsu are good for making smileys. Tsu （ツ） works better for regular straightforward smileys though.

If you want to go 2ch-style, I like ((*´Д`)ﾊｧﾊｧ) and (ｷﾀ━━━━━━(ﾟ∀ﾟ)━━━━━━ !!!!!)

I'm not sure how to make the Д and ∀ without using copypasta though. Can someone tell me the alt code for them?

I prefer text smilies over gifs. I turn image smiles off because I especially hate it when I am using parentheses and suddenly I have a bunch of faces in my posts.

Also, when it comes to text smilies, anything vertical is go. I still haven't found a sufficient substitute for ":p" as in "silly" and ":-(" as in "I'm sad, but not crying." Suggestions?

My most common are ^_^, T.T, >.>, >.<, o.O, and @.@
