    He's magical.

That, or he had like 0.2 HP and since there are no decimals in the counter it had to be marked as zero.

He dies anyway. It's just like Tellah in IV. Adrenaline kicks in before they kick the bucket.

    Two words. He's Galuf.

His pure awesome allows him to defy the limits of his reality.

Tellah was a bit different though: his adenaline stopped his MP running out and allowed him to cast a spell whose MP cost was higher than his maximum. Nevertheless that's easily the best answer

Well when you reallize that Zero HP does not equal "death" it makes more sense.

Despite the translated versions of some games describing Zero HP as "Death", it isn't they are merely just so badly damamged they can't fight anymore (or do anything) hence why the others can "revive" them. (Not the right word evidently).

Gaulf just kept him self going when he should have stopped, so he died.

It's just making use of the medium to express the idea of superhuman rage, very artistic really.

I always thought it was because of the forcefield that ExDeath used to smack Krile around. Galuf kind of absorbed it so although his HP went to 0 it was deflecting Exdeath's attacks.

I suppose the joke answer here would be "his beard protected him"
The messenger is standing at the gate
    Ready to let go
    Ready for the crush
    Too late for whispers
    Too late for the blush
    The past is mercy
    When the future is aglow

The old man was operating on a higher level at that point.

Yep. People can accomplish amazing things when they're under extreme pressures and having an overwhelming drive to do something. That can include enduring well beyond human limits, and fighting with a strength beyond what's normally possible.

It's not rage, though. He says so!
