I loved that scene...I don't know,i think it added more realism to the story and i liked that the game didn't give you an option to free them.Not everything should have a happy ending.
I wish there was a bit more of a story behind it though (same with most NPCs in old-Archades.)

There's so many NPCs in that game that I ended up glossing over their story as I made my way through the game. There are a lot of little things to take in if you're thorough and pay attention to detail.
