I hope that the protagonists use the official, released names as aliases for a majority of the game and that their true names have yet to be revealed.

And I think that their names will revert around the plot of the story.
It might be nice to play as a character named Snow that I don't want to kill for once... damn you Suikoden IV!

I do believe it's already been stated that these are aliases; whether or not their real names will ever be given is up in the air, I think. I suppose it depends whether or not their "true" identities are relevant to the plot (of which we know too little to make such a qualification).
I didn't know they were using aliases (besides Mr. 33cm) guess you learn something new everyday

Lightning is a name you'll almost never find in English spelling. Snow is also rare: they could have used Ice, but that's severely cliche. I might say the next ally's name would be Wind: Gale would be cool but it's also overused. Another possibility would be Ocean: Cloud has only been used a few times to my memory but it's still too recent; Rain is too obvious and River has also been repeated; the only Ocean I know of is on the Ocean's 11-13 series.
Of course, I was concocting a fanfic of VII with a villain named Ocean so I may be a little biased.
