Its not so much that modern games are atrocious but more that they tend to be rather bland. I tend to get quite bored with fairly fun games because I just feel like I've played the exact same game before.

I mainly play RPG's which hasn't been hit as hard with the "bland scale" like FPS have but most of those tend to be falling into the whole "Voice acting is more important than actual plot" and "Lets just phone in the battle system" boat.
