Yeah, playing since mafia III is no excuse. I've played since mafia II, and hosted three games.
However, playing third party has allowed me to see everything from an outside perspective, and I believe that a few changes to the game by the next hosts will fix some of the issues with inactivity.
First off is the time limits. Some people who want to play, such as f f freak for example, have limited times where they can access a computer and read the long thread filled with posts. Sure there are also those that sign up and vanish, and those people suck. Combined with these circumstances, there are timezones to put into consideration as well. But beyond them a possible solution would be longer days, perhaps 48 hours for the first 4 or so, then shortened to 24 as the endgame approaches.
Secondly is the opposite of inactives, and thats the overactive players. When one or two people have access to a computer regularly and post so rapidly, while it does make the game, it also has one nasty side effect. It crates a feedback loop that causes the inactive players to become more inactive. Hopefully this feedback loop will be broken if the days are longer.
Thirdly, there is a bit too much of Moderators trying to outdo each other. When I hosted with Psy, we had two insane setups. We introduced several roles that have appeared in several other games, such as Roleblocker and Vigilante. But hosts, look at the setups in the archive, and especially at Del and Miriels setups. A simple setup can still be fun, you don't need to have a million different roles for a good game.
Finally there is a few moderators that have been overactive as well. This is all a moderator has to do.
Note how I did not include the votecount. stop being lazy town and do it yourself. Psy was simply being nice to you by giving it to you. A final votecount is the only thing I would give as a moderator, the rest should be done by the town.Start the day.
Reveal the role of lynched person upon death.
End day.
Confirm night actions.
Send results to any investigative type role.
Reveal roles of dead people from the night.
Repeat until over.
I agree what qwerty has said except for the part about the day being longer. In a 48 hour day I will lose interest in the game pretty quickly. Day 1 is understandable I guess but after that 24 hours is fine. The solution to the inactive problem is to not let people play who have in the past been inactive.

I totally agree with the moderators outdoing eachother thing x.x
Days I wouldn't want a minute longer than 36 hours xD
I definitely agree with what qwerty said about set ups. I think the ones we used were very much experimental, to see how certain things would play out. Mine was firmly based around having no Vanilla Town because of how people would simply refuse to play properly if they had that role. Getting back to a nice and basic set up would be a good thing I think!
>:O I'm moving the posts to the discussion thread you dork!

Yeah. That's just generally my personality. When I'm interested in something I'm really interested, to the point where it becomes nearly obsessive. Then after a while, I'm done for one reason or another, I usually keep some kind of intrigue for a while (like my continuation of retoolin' the mafia archive, still going to host, and hell maybe finishing the last section of that essay), but eventually I'll just be done with it all together.
Seeing the things other mafia players do that played the same amount of games usually makes me think: "That's sad.."
It's still a game people. :/
At least I wouldn't have fun keeping journals and such.
I get totally obsessed with Mafia during game week...in fact it's caused me to be sort of rude to people IRL xD
I also agree that a simple set up is better than a complex set up. Crazy ones can be fun sometimes, but I'd rather be warned that it's crazy before I sign up so I know what I'm getting myself into.
This set up was nice. Not many power roles for the town though.
