That Johnny line has to be a mistranslation of sorts. Cloud failed to get in to SOILDER. And if he failed to get in then there is no way that loser Johnny would make it.

That guy's a jerk. I kept thinking he was trying to steal Tifa away from Cloud. I think they should have had him keep popping up throughout the game though. Maybe he shows up at The Gold Saucer and then at Icicle Inn etc but it seems like they forgot about him after Costa Del Sol.

Yeah, I think that a lot of the script was in place before the twist was decided. And, remember, this was still in the old days. Square did not have the resources to go and ensure that every single line of conversation was in line with the general script. So, one could possibly discount the SOLDIER line as nothing more than a mess up.

Maybe Johnny wasn't in SOLDIER. Maybe Tifa told him about her childhood friend, Cloud, who went off to join SOLDIER, or something.

Don't ask me why Johnny remembers Cloud being in SOLDIER, too. Maybe he was delusional about the both of them.

I never really thought too much about that scene. I ran under the assumption that Johnny really didn't know Cloud all that well and just presumed he could get away with lying to him because Cloud's stories were a little off. The stories of one liar to another, right? Aside from that, it's possibly an overlooked mistake left in the game.

I don't think Johnny was really hot after Tifa. I figure he had a crush but knew he couldn't handle a tiger like Tifa. I think he pretty much wanted to sound cool. You notice he doesn't say that line when you can actually see Tifa around.

It's not just the Johnny line though. President Shinra says right before the boss battle on the bridge where Cloud falls down that he recognizes him from soldier but can't recall his name.

Well Cloud was technically in SOLDIER wasn't he? He just (SPOILER)wasn't one of the sucsessful ones like Sephiroth and Zack (i.e. "First Class")

He was just a shinra mercenary. SOLDIERs used swords. Mercenaries used guns. But they both are with ShinRa though.
