The increased use of annoying animated .gifs is pretty much making the decision for us though.

I've only seen two new .gifs so far, and that's Allie's and Aaron's. It's not like that's even very relevant to the avatar size, since one can have annoying .gifs at pretty much any size. The rest of the new .gifs belong to those who already had animated avatars to begin with.

I would've switched to this avatar regardless of the size change, for the record. I'd just have used a smaller version of it. In fact it was actually harder for me to make the change in 80x80 because I had to remove the "Communism" caption from the original version in order to make it fit the file size requirements.
