Default The Huge Materia missions where fairly pointless...

I have touched on this before, but I am going to post it now for some reason. It has probably been said before.

FFVII is my favourite FF, but it has it's faults and the biggest in my opinion (yes, "biggest" even though this is pretty minor) is the lack of importance in the Huge Materia missions. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them, but the game doesn't require you to get them or not, whatever happens (SPOILER)the rocket will always fail to stop the Meteor and the Shinra's mission will always be described as a faliure.

Square could have at least changed the scripts if nothing else, like if you fail to get them, keep it as it is, but if you do get them have the characters blame themselves or something. Anyone else thought this? (sorry if this is a bad post)

Yea something should change. They can't succeed in destroying the meteor because then there wouldn't be a disk 3. Really the only impact that as overall, story wise, is Coral may or may not get a train in their ass. And the Condor dies not matter what happens too.

I think they were a good way to justify revisiting previous locations and bringing closure to several dangling sub-plots. The Huge Materia themselves are also a welcome homage to the four elemental Crystals of early Final Fantasy.

Yeah, I don't expect Meteor to be destroyed, for reasons you said. I dunno I just think they could have at least had the characters dialogue change when they are in the Highwind and they say "The Shinra's plan was a faliure" or something. Keep that for when you fail, but when you succeed it should be something like "Where we wrong to interfear with their plans?"

That's a good point really, if you save Coral it practically wraps up Barret's story, I guess.

There is a line in the game like that almost exactly like that. I think Cait Sith expresses guilt after the missile fails to destroy meteor. They say something like- Cloud: "The Shinra's plan failed." Barret: "Damn." Cait Sith: "We've been interfering in their plans all this time...." Then Red randomly suggests going to visit Bugenhagen. They did the conversation so it'd make sense depending on how many huge materias you've collected.

    From a storyline point the huge materia worked in several ways;
    - Barret gets redemption in Corel and earns the town's respect again.
    - Cid does to become the first person in space and accomplish his dream. He also learns that Sherra was right about the dodgy escape pods and that he was wrong to treat her that way he did.
    - The Fort Condor subplot was wrapped up.
    - You get a submarine! You can then use that to get the underwater key, fight Emerald and battle the Turks once more.

What isn't made very clear however is just why Avalanche are trying to stop the Shinra collecting all the huge materia. I guess they wanted the materia themselves to use in the battle with Sephiroth, or they wanted Bahamut Zero...

It is mentioned somewhere in the game, because I remember it. Materia is basically Lifestream that has been compressed into a small little ball. The Huge Materia obviously has a lot of Lifestream in it. AVALANCHE believed that if they were destroyed in the impact with Meteor, so much Lifestream would also be destroyed that the planet could never recover. Or something along those lines.

dude there's plenty of story instances where the characters try something that does not work. It added so many great scenes to the story, I could never wish it away. Champagne Supernova also clarified why they did it, it was too much lifestream to simply be thrown away, I think to an extent they knew it wouldn't stop Meteor, it would've been a terrible waste of the planet's energy.

It was also the classic FF scramble for the crystals that took place in I, III, IV, and V.

    My thoughts exactly.

That was the era where they had to get rid of the crystals, but they really didnt want to.

Sort of like a homeage to the old series.

You know how the back side of meteor it all busted up looking
I think it would have been cool that if you collect all the huge materia then it would be a solid rock but if u failed at collecting most of them then it busts up the meteor on the one side but not nearly enogh to destroy it.

That rocket did a decent amount of damage to meteor, huge materia or not. The Sister Ray probably could've done more, though.

I may be wrong, but if you watch the scene, the parts that where blasted off by the rocket appear to be heading towards meteor - meaning it is re-assembling itself, i.e. even if the rocket had completly destroyed meteor, it wouldn't have made a difference.

Not if it completely desentigrated it

I mean it would have magically re-assembled (just a theory).

Well if the rocket had destroyed meteor it may not have made a difference. Sephiroth could have used the spell a second time.....depending on how much MP the black magic costs. Who knows who could have paired it up with Quadra Magic.
