Movie with a similar ending to day the earth stood still...

Day the earth stood still reminded me of a movie Ive seen and Im trying to find it but i cant remember what it was called. All I remember about it is that at the end some guy pushes a button on a remote control shutting down all the electronics on the planet. I think he was in some kind of junkyard or really rundown place at the end and he was somewhat surrounded. If anyone knows the movie Im talking about can you please tell me what it is? I think I was rather young when I saw it.

The only movie I can think of is Escape from L.A. based on your description. I never saw The Day the Earth Stood still but the ending you describe and the setting makes me think of Escape from L.A.

Yes I think thats it!! The year fits and I seem to have some memory of the main character, and L.A. It's all come flooding back to me! Many thanks!

edit: (SPOILER)And Klaatu doesn't die. Gort revives him when whatsherface says that command deal in the alien language.

edit again: After reading wikipedia it's becoming apparent that you didn't see the original, so idk if Klaatu dies in that or not.

I saw the original a few years back, but i was asking about the ending of the remake where he just sorta melts into the giant iron filing Gort tornado. The original was rather straight forward.
