This is especially true of live action adaptations of video games. If it were animated, it would have a much better chance of working as a film because animation allows for stylized characters much more than live action and the FF characters tend to be stylized.
I think the fundamental difference between the mediums is that video games give you a certain amount of control over what happens, while in a movie or book you simply passively allow the story to unfold.
AC felt like 75% action and 25% character interaction, and I think a more equal balance between the two would suit a FFX film better. I care as much what happens between the characters as what happens to them.
