I've tried both. I usually take the stairs though. I'm always reminded of a similar scene in Ghostbusters (around 1:40).

Done both of them before. I guess it depends on my mood.
Pretty sure I always took the stairs, don't know why. Just seemed like the right thing to do, I guess.

I never take the stairs, not even for the elixir. I just don't have the patience for it, and besides its always fun just to kick down the door and bust your way in and through.

If I remember correctly I have always busted through front door. I just like going with big bang. Guess I could try the other way.
Take the stairs up then down (after Elixir) then bust in. My choice is random whom I agree with. I think it's mostly Barret because I like his reaction whereas Tifa doesn't really have one.I'm not sure about this.
I usually take stairs for the retard part (Tifa kicks @$$ rofl), but I like the bust in scene into the front door, how Cloud takes out his Buster Sword all like, "LETS OPEN UP A CAN OF Whoop @$$!"

Really, it matters about Patience level, and maybe you are curious for a while, but
usually if you're doing a FF7 challenge game or low level gamem or you are just weak or don't wanna battle, you prolly wanna go through the back stairs...
If you want experience or you feel bad @$$, then you go through the front
