Only bright colours can burn in. And even then, it takes an incredible amount of time to do so. Furhtermore, it isn't even permanent, burnt in plasma displays can be fixed by displaying an all white image at maximum brightness for a while, then make it go all black again.

If your father was right, then you'd burn in the TV by turning it on and not select a channel :/
