Corgis are more short than small. They have long bodies and larger features than most 'small' dogs, but the only part of them that makes them particularly 'small' is their stumpy little legs.

Hating small dogs and liking big dogs at the same time makes no sense.

This. The only things which should matter in dog size are whether you can handle the strength of the dog if it wants to run away and kill something, and the size of your living space and how often you can excersise it.
