Thread: Sunshine and sunshine music!

    Default Sunshine and sunshine music!

Summer's coming up, which pretty much means sunshine and sunshine music! Therefor, I feel the need to spread fine artists and bands bringing laid-back summer vibes into this world.

Animal Liberation Orchestra - Roses and Clover

Zach Gill - Don't touch my stuff

It's pretty much all I listen to these days. (SPOILER)Zach Gill is not only singer/pianist in the 2 video's listed above, he's also pianist/backup vocalist in Jack Johson's band. Nice.

    So who's your favourite summer-ish artist/band?

The music I listen to is very much affected by the seasons. In the winter I tend to listen a lot to calmer music with vocalists of warm, close, comfortable voices (Leonard Cohen, Devendra Banhart, Laura Marling, Johnny Flynn, modern Dylan just to name a few).

I tend to go for more easy-going, rhythmical, refreshing stuff in the summer. Listening to Björk is, to me, the musical equivalent of having my face dabbed with ice cold water, it's very effective on hot days. Post-rock stuff like Explosions in the Sky is great in the summer also, The Shins works very well, some reggae and electronica/synthpop is unavoidable, and, what else... some classical pieces like Pärt's Fratres work wonders.

My music taste isn't really seasonal, though I find I listen to more hardcore punk (Minor Threat, This is Hell) in summer and more slow, electronic stuff in winter.

Oh, and naturally, at least once every summer I have to listen to Katrina and the Waves "Walking on Sunshine" nonstop for an hour.

I'm with rubah, indie is definitely summer music.

I've taken to William Fitzsimmons for that.

I think Explosions in the Sky is definitely more winter though. =O

The Go! Team, Ash, some Super Furry Animals stuff, The Beach Boys, Panda Bear, Basement Jaxx - all spring to mind.

Yeah. I listen to a lot of indie all the time, but in a way it's more suitable for summer.

    Default Just a few

It's just been reggae reggae reggae for me, recently, a mixture of a lot of it; old ska and blue beat stuff, rocksteady, dancehall, and dub, and the two-tone British ska. Desmond Dekker, Toots & the Maytals, Prince Buster, Yellowman, The Upsetters, basically anything - I've been listening a lot to Yellowman's Mister Yellowman album and a Channel One compilation, since I got bought them for my birthday.

Also, there are some great summer feeling tunes on Quantic's Apricot Morning (Transatlantic, Blackstone Rock, Not So Blue), though couldn't find some on YouTube. Among all the Quantic-esque music, there's some great chilled summery stuff, kinda jazzy, funky music from Mr. Scruff, Lack of Afro, etc.

I'd like to add Donavon Frankenreiter to the list for when I'm in a funky kind of mood.

It's kind of old, but Empire of the Sun's "Walking on a Dream" is this summer's track for me. Also "1 more night" by ravex feat. MONKEY MAJIK.

I drive a lot, so I usually pop in the latest hipster electrohouse tracks (Crookers, Bloody Beetroots, Steve Aoki, MSTRKRFT, Justice). As for indie, Passion Pit and La Roux are probably going to remind me of this summer.
