Just musing some random things no actual guess, I think the last line might refer to a monster that can dish out the Sadness status, the first line makes me think its the rabbit type creature that you fight near the snow boarding town but it completely does not tie in with the rest of the clues.
Both theories are wrong.
The answer has nothing to do with a monster, but something that may be used to battle. I got one more hint up my sleeve. I'll use it when things get rough.

So its something that may be used in battle? I can only assume its an item or materia of some sort... Is it the Contain Materia?
Also if I'm wrong I was wondering if the "may" means "can only" be used in battle?
