In Japan, the games have been consistently reprising the same names for spells, items, equipment, and miscellaneous objects since the first game in which any of these appeared. In the West, though, the games have been (and continue to be) translated a ludicrous number of times by an array of wildly eclectic teams. This naturally leads to a dozen or more different interpretations of a single term that's appeared always exactly the same in the source material, and this fascinates me.
So, whenever I play a new Final Fantasy (or a new port or remake of an old Final Fantasy, which is often the case), I'm constantly on the edge of my seat to see whether they're saying Gurg, Gurgu, or Gulug this time.
It's...a little bit crazy.
