Was drug along to see Rise of the Planet of the Apes, because a friend wanted to see it.
Maybe it's because my expectation were so low, but it wasn't as bad I thought it would be. There were many little plot holes, and I'm sure some major ones if I cared to really analyze things. It did make a decent, mindless action movie.
Sound/Music: The sound effects were good enough. The only sound effect I actively didn't like was (SPOILER) when Caesar began speaking. It just bothered me because I don't care how advanced his mind was, I don't think chimp vocal chords are that versatile. So the wonder drug wouldn't have done anything. Plus it just sounded stupid. The music seemed pretty good actually. I'd have to listen to it without the movie to see if it could carry itself, but it didn't stick out as bad.
Special Effects: Most of the effects were fair, but the chimps just didn't look that great. Caesar is a fine example. There were some gorillas and orangutans that looked realistic. The chimps and the their many, countless close-ups of them contemplating things looked overly fake.
Plot: Average for this type of film. I have no idea how the original story line stated everything got started, but this over-all plot is acceptable. It's a rebirth of the series, so it will be different. There are holes, but there's always holes. It set up two more developing story arcs, so brace yourselves, because there will be sequels. We all knew that was coming. I just was hoping against hope.
Acting: Franco's acting was meh. Actually all the acting was a little stale. I was happy to see John Lithgow, but even he wasn't up to form. David Oyelowo had a pretty good bit of acting near the end of the film. That's about it.
If you wanted to see this movie, you'll still want to see it. If you're undecided, wait for it on DVD. If you know you'll hate it, why are you even reading this? To hurt me? To make fun of my wonderful review? Well, you're a jerk.
Score: 6/10
