I hadn't actually watched this movie in many years. I was newly impressed by the ingenuity and wit found in so much of the dialogue, and I was careful to observe statements that would later be retconned (Luke's father and his relationships to both Owen and Obi-Wan), as well as plot threads that were pared down from their original writing and production—either to be abandoned (Luke's friendship with Biggs) or embellished in the sequels (Han's debt to Jabba).

The special effects are still so impressive for 1977 as to renew my conviction that overwriting them with 1997/2004 effects is a misguided endeavor at best (and artless and disrespectful at worst).
