Just watched a movie called Black Robe. It's about a Jesuit missionary and his assistant being escorted to a Mission located in a Huron village by a group of Algonquins. It's very story driven and not fast paced, so not for some. I found the story pretty interesting, and liked to see how the dynamic of the missionary played out against his escorts.

I think it's either a French or French Canadian film and the version I saw only offered the dubbed voice over. So if you find that distracting, fair warning. For something I picked randomly to stream off of Netflix I was pleasantly surprised.

    I'm a harsh judge, but I'd say 6.5 of 10.

    Tron Legacy
Nice visuals, decent enough story, and some good references to the first one. Though I think the whole thing with the ISO's was a bit of a let down, I was expecting more.

    7/10

    Your highness

HILAAAARIOUS. Sure, it was a stupid movie overall but there was a joke in at least every scene. The minotaur dick trophy was the one of the funniest scenes ever. People in the theater were loling hard. That scene alone is the reason to see this movie.

6/10 or a 3/5 Cas it isn't that great overall, but a decent amount of laughs for a one time watch. Except for the minotaur scene.

    Advent Children Complete
I just finished playing Crisis Core and the original game, and I must say despite what other's may think I really felt it was a good way to wrap up Final Fantasy VII. The revision of the whole movie along with the extra footage really made this great. Anything with more Turks and Zack is great, at least. It's just a shame that they went and added Dirge of Cerberus to the compilation.

    8/10

I watched that "new" Tron film the other day.

Man, Tron is awesome. I mean, digital world, light cycles, all the fighting and everything was cool. Daft Punk and Zeus were awesome too.

But as a film it kind of sucked. The plot was pretty shaky and oh god some of the dialogue was just ridiculous. Radical man! I get why he spoke like that but ugh.

Still gonna love it to pieces despite everything

    Sucker Punch

I'm conflicted about this smurfing movie. On one hand it was beautiful visually. On the other hand it seems very disjointed storywise, like the story was almost a vehicle for the action scenes (which there weren't even that many of).

I've had time to digest it, and I think I like it overall after making some more sense of the plot. It's definitely not the type of movie it is advertised as though.

Weird flick, I give it an 8.
Wait wtf. I'm surprised this isn't a David Lynch film.
It's Cronenberg, and it's based on a William S. Burroughs novel. I would not be surprised if Burroughs was one of Lynch's major influences, so yeah.

    Beautiful Noise - 9/10

Indie film shown at the Sarasota Film Festival. Imagine that Bob Dylan, instead of returning to music after his motorcycle accident, simply disappeared from the public spotlight and stopped writing music. And imagine that instead of The Basement Tapes, his most recent work had been an introspective concept album that his record company refused to release. That's the basic summation of the back story to this film, although the obvious musical point of comparison for the character in question (named Bobby Drake in the film) is Neil Diamond, whom the actor playing him sounds exactly like. More than three decades later, a free-spirited young girl from L.A. comes across some of the demos Drake had recorded for his concept album and is struck by the sentiment that these are surefire hits if only someone would record them properly, so she sets out to find Drake and convince him to release them.

The director had actually wanted to use some of Diamond's songs for the film, but was unable to do so. It's probably for the best because the original songs the cast composed are actually superb. The plot is almost entirely predictable, but it doesn't really matter because it's a vehicle for presenting the songs anyway. Plus, most of the tropes used in this film appear so often because they're effective. The cinematography is gorgeous; there are some breathtaking shots of Sarasota in the film.

I'd recommend seeing it if you can do so. I don't know if it's been picked up by any distributors yet or not, but all six showings at the film festival were apparently at least close to being sold out so I wouldn't be surprised if that made it look attractive to movie studio execs. It's been compared to the film Once, which I think is pretty accurate, although this is more rock-oriented than that. Some of the songs are more classic rock-styled and some are more modern rock-styled, but they're all good. I'm ripping the soundtrack, which I considered good enough to drop $10 on, as we speak; at least one song appears on it that was not in the film, namely a cover of Joni Mitchell's "Free Man in Paris." I will probably upload it later; if anyone is interested, let me know.

1/10 and a big f you to my teacher for making me watch this

Crap. Oppressive crap. The woman is so pathetic and frustratingly so. Thank God for things like Salt and Jackie Brown proving that not all women are this pathetic. And my teacher who is apparently a feminist writer (she writes for the Village voice and other acclaimed ish) but some of her taste in things is reprehensible. There is nothing to like about the characters or the story.

Sometimes she's spot on but others is just like wut. She confused Kevin Bacon with Ethan Hawke even when we told her there was no Ethan Hawke and she still kept saying Ethan. We tell her this is an oppressive bull of a movie and she says it's groundbreaking feminism at it's finest. I mean what the hell is this woman smoking. She could be my second teacher who I will be giving a bad write-up for.

Let's do this chronologically for me.

    Howl's Moving Castle
Thought it was smurfing fantastic. Never seen a Studio Ghibli film before and I went into this with heavy expectations. Blew me clean out of the water. I was impressed with everything, it was wonderful.

    Spirited Away
Watched this the other night and I didn't enjoy it as much as Howl's, but at the same time I could appreciate it. I spent a little bit of time going wtf is going on, but it was still wonderful. Chihiro's english voice actor basically shouts all her lines though, that was a bit disturbing. And No-Face's "ah ah" was comically annoying.

    Suckerpunch
Yes yes yes. This film entertained me. I argued with my girlfriend for about two hours about the film. Yes, it wasn't a masterpiece and parts of it were clumsily related, but it employed some neat and subtle narrative devices.

Obviously the fact that it's chicks in lingerie shooting the smurf out of nazi zombies and dragons is a bit strange, but most of it can be (loosely) related back to the beginning and end narration which talks about fantasies, the time period it was set in and the fact that (SPOILER)Babydoll was raped, perhaps several times, which (as far as I'm aware) can cause oversexualisation [you know what I mean though right] in victims.

Like I said, not a fantastic movie, but kudos for trying to keep some artistic merit while still scoring the horny male viewership.

It was a serious debate. ish. She just said it was rubbish and argued that the super serious bookends didn't match the inside which was there purely for sex appeal and that there was absolutely no reason justification for the dreams etc etc.

Her pet hate was the song and dance number in the credits. That sealed the deal for her.

I told her why she was wrong though, don't worry. And then I bribed her with copious amounts of chocolate so I'm in the clear.

    Scream 4

Definite fan service to those who really liked the first Scream. There was one thing I was a little disappointed about because it was sort of done in Scream 3 and there was one thing that made me go WTF? Overall it was good.

I saw that the other day, I really liked it well into the movie. I enjoyed it right up until the reveal of the killers. Then I just got pissed of.

(SPOILER)I know in Scream 3 Sidney's brother was the killer so I wasn't thinking that they were going to go the family route again, but during the movie they had stopped showing Jill for a while so I started to expect it again, but then put that thought away because of thought 1 and got disappointed when it was revealed. Also I sort of knew that that high school guy was going to be one when Ghostface didn't immediately stab him like everyone else. I was expecting a bit more surprise with that one.
