Moon
Starring Sam Rockwell and well that's about it. So if you just don't like Sam Rockwell you should probably avoid the movie. If you do like him, well, there's a lot of just him in the movie. Him and Kevin Spacey's voice.
I don't want to give anything away, so it's hard to say anything specific about the movie, but it's very well acted, though not always well directed.
The background is that Sam is the lone human worker overseeing a massive mining operation on the far side of the moon. He's coming to the end of a three year contract, and he's excited to return to earth and his wife and young daughter.
There are some interesting themes (memory, identity, corporate greed) though none of them get fully articulated, not the way I would have liked. But then again, I don't think the movie intended to be that way and failed. I think it did what it set out to do, but it definitely left me wanting more.
I personally found it worth my time simply to see Rockwell in the role.

Silver Linings Playbook - 5/5
It's extremely rare that I watch a romance and really get sucked into it, this has to be right up there. It's also extremely rare I watch a modern movie with Robert De Niro in it without cringing, and I didn't cringe, so that's good, too. I found this enjoyable on pretty much all levels and while at times it was predictable, it wasn't something I was thinking about at the time. I just really enjoyed the movie, the characters, the writing. All round, thumbs up.
I have a buttload of movies to watch now, so hopefully I get through some more of them soon (Moonrise Kingdom, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Cloud Atlas etc).

I'll throw up some quick reviews of some Oscar movies I watched
Life of Pi - Really enjoyed it. Cinematography was excellent. Also THE only movie where the 3D really made the experience way way better for me (Avatar can suck my balls). Never read the book. Probably my 2nd favorite of the batch I've seen here 8/10
Lincoln - Better than I expected. TLJ was pretty great as Thaddeus Stevens. It made me sad to be reminded of how politicians in the US used to stand up for what they believed in regardless of bulltrout party loyalties. Melodramatic, sure, and nothing breathtaking, but good cinema. Which sums up about 95% of Spielberg's oeuvre. 7/10
Zero Dark Thirty - Mostly a steaming pile of crap. I felt no connection to the story or the characters. The main actress was nominated for Best Actress in a leading role...right? How in the smurf did that happen? Only interesting from a historical standpoint. 4/10
Beasts of the Southern Wild - Great movie with a lot of heart. The young actress is so talented and so believable. Fell in love with her from the start. Also an excellent performance from the guy playing the father. Ending was a bit disappointing in my opinion but that doesn't stop it from being a great movie8/10
Argo - Picture of the year for me. I was so impressed not only with the way the historical context was handled, but also with how real the dialogue seemed. When all the diplomats were holed up in the Canadian ambassador's house, frustrated with each other and their situation, and bickering at each others' throats, I was so impressed with how the conversations were acted out. People butting into others' arguments, people being petty and being called out for it; I haven't seen it done so well in a film since I can remember. Also John Goodman is always a class act. Only gripe is the ending got a bit too riduculous, but hey, Hollywood 9/10
Silver Linings Playbook - Wholly unimpressed. Good concept, and I was intrigued by it from the beginning, but it just ended up a gigantic mess. Jennifer Lawrence was good because her voice is sexy, but that's about it. Bradley Cooper gives the best performance I've seen him give, but that is not saying much at all. The relationships between the various characters are stupid as hell (the perpetual presence of the policeman and the psychologist in particular irked the hell out of me), and the only part that moved me in any way was Cooper's monologue in the beginning at the mental ward. Huge disappointment. 5/10

If you're not a Wes Anderson fan, you may not like Moonrise Kingdom. Some people called it weird, which stung my little heart. I found it adorable.
Babe and I are watching Beasts of the Southern Wild tomorrow! I had never even head of it before until I was looking around on some movie trivia website and found that it had received awards and stuff. I'm kindof excited based on the hype it's received.

Okay I finished Argo and I will say this...there are many times through the years where mediocre films like Dances with Wolves or Shakespeare in love beating out films that were more deserving of Best Picture.
I don't feel that way with Argo because I feel that the films this year weren't up to par with some of the films from last year or even as far ago as 2007. Out of the choices of all the films that were nominated this was the least mediocre.
Lincoln, while I am bias of Daniel Day Lewis, not even he could make me love this melodramatic, wordy, droll of a movie. To me it was Spielberg trying too hard to win Best Picture so everything in is so obviously deliberate it's almost nauseating.
Beasts of the Southern Wild: Yeah the little girl was terrific and so was the dad, but apart from enjoying their scenes together, and being really emotionally connected to the girl, this film is just meh. The ending is meh, the middle is meh, the beginning is interesting. If anything I'd say I enjoyed the little girl's performance more than Jennifer Lawrence's and I actually wished she would've won.
Speaking of Jennifer Lawrence, yeah her performance was really good and it made Silver Linings Playbook much more endearing. I will even go as far to say Bradley Cooper's performance was also good and I liked how he veered away from being a douchebag in a comedy to a douchebag in a dramatic rom com. However, like most rom coms it was predictable and the end speech is just cringe-worthy. Call me cynical, but hey, I haven't liked a romantic drama/comedy since Annie Hall, or The Notebook. I'm not starting again now.
Now back to Argo - Best Picture. I think it's a good film by comparison to a lot of the other films of this year, but the whole thing is like an analogy for Hollywood jerking themselves. It was done purely for drama and not so much to be historically accurate which is fine, but my miff about everything is that if you're going to do that then do it all the way and go deeper in to the drama of it. There were a lot of parts where there could have been more back story in to why Ben Affleck's character (who by the way was Hispanic so why the hell was was wooden Ben Affleck playing him) was an alcholic and struggling with his family. I couldn't help but want more from his performance aside from the woodenness. In fact every time he picked up his brandy I thought, you know who did this better and was even subtle about it? Paul Newman in The Verdict. Maybe he should take a cue.
If you're going in to this film thinking it's going to be a movie about the Americans held captive in the Middle East, you're going to be dissappointed because that's only about twenty percent of what the film is truly about. The film is almost entirely about Hollywood.
All in all, enjoyable film, but unimpressive compared to the likes of films like The Departed, No Country for Old Men, or There Will be Blood. The editor saved this film which was otherwise flawed most likely due to Ben Affleck's mediocre acting and direction.
The final Oscar films I have yet to see is Amour, but it's French so I don't care. If it's not Amelie idgaf. Half joking there. Also haven't seen Life of Pi yet. I hate Ang Lee for ruining The Hulk and making Brokeback Mountain...actually just in general I hate Ang Lee's work, so that's why I put off seeing that film for so long. When I found out that beloved VFX company, Rhythm and Hues worked on it I was like "oh I have to see this now". They're my saving grace.
Sinister;
Excellent movie, great scares and interesting storyline. They were sensible with the gore and artful with the paranormal introductions to the movie. 10/10 Best horror flick in a long line of smurf ups imo.

I mean, it's not bad in any way, but it never blew me away and it never had me rolling in fits of laughter. Just seemed a bit too serious for it's own good. The accents amused Danielle and myself, though, and it was a decent story, good animation, etc.

So funny I didn't mind watching it a second (third?) time. Drags at times near the end, but I just love Megamind. He's hilarious.

So awesome I didn't mind watching it a second time. In fact, in a rare situation, I suggested watching a movie I'd already seen before. Which is really unusual because that kind of thing is normally reserved for Danielle in our flat.

A Perfect Host I watched the other night.
Dear god, I don't think I've ever been so unnerved while watching a movie, and it was glorious. The Premise is a guy who is guilty of armed robbery breaks into a guys house, but the guy in question is beyond smurfing nuts, and played by the guy who played Frasier's brother.
The movie isn't very gory or anything, all of the creepy comes from the villains mannerism and issues and it is smurfing wonderful. Also, did not see the end coming at all. This is really a damn good movie in pretty much every respect. And hey, not many movies are as funny as this is, as well as creepy. Go watch it, it's on Net flix.
9/10. (Really tempted to give it a 10/10.)

7/10. Pretty solid movie. Was entertaining all the way through. Nothing stood out really in the story or anything except that it was events prior to the Wizard of Oz. Wicked Witches were awesome tho.
Oz: The Great and Powerful
It was actually really good. Very solid acting and gorgeous visuals. Also had some of the best 3D work I've seen yet.
I like Kung-Fu.
