1) Smack the edge of the lid against a hard surface to dislodge the suction;
2) Wrap the lid in some high-friction fabric (rubber, shirt, towel, whatev);
3) Open lid.

If lid does not open, repeat steps 1-3

Yeah, smacking it isn't very smart. You can, however, use a blunt knife in step 1. Pry it in between the lid and the jar until you hear the al too familiar sound of air slipping in.

turn the jar upside down then while maintaining a firm grip smack the bottom with the heel of your hand, should work
