Australia is the underdog in all the sports that I follow. We are ridiculously patriotic, but we also support others who are the underdog. I remember watching a tennis match where the foreigner was cheered for more by the crowd then the Australian player. Of course it was that girl with the jerk father, I don't remember. Tennis isn't my sport either.

Yes. NZ and Australia are bros. I support the kiwis in everything they do. When NZ are playing against Australia, it's like watching two friends duke it out and then share a laugh afterwards.

Australia might have the problem of tall poppy syndrome, but this one minor negative means that Australian's are more willing to give everyone a fair go and to get out there and support the underdog in pretty much every sport there is. As they say, the Aussie crowd claps loudest for the last man who crosses the finish line. Isn't that nice?

I admit that your country is beautiful but that doesn't make it better than mine. However I would just like to point out a particular detail - you no longer live in NZ, so obviously there is something wrong with it.

It's all about the vote. I don't claim to understand why most would vote my name over another, but the name did receive more votes than the names it faced, even if it wasn't by a huge amount like some of the others had. If the tournament received more voters during the later rounds, perhaps we'll have a different result.

I can't believe to this day that I once got to a final of this contest for any reason other than being popular, so I guess it can happen to anyone.

I think it's obvious popularity clouds this tournament that better names are many times overlooked in favor of a friend or what have you. Shame, The Shoeless Hobo should have won this IMO.
