Sten like Morrigan is easy to displease with your choices, generally however for a callous or a evil character Sten is a very good companion since all he will care about is taking down the blight. It can lead to great scenes if you take Sten to bigger conversations with people such as Redcliffe when you're deciding on how best to help the Arl's son. Or the circle of mages, it's also a really easy way to get the intimidate/persuade checks done if you're after the trophy/achievements for that because Sten will generally challenge your decision, especially if it won't immediately help you to tackle the blight. I really don't like Sten though. I wish I'd left him in Lothering to get eaten by Darkspawn.
