Your acting as though they forced you to run and gun in the game. What made MGS4's gameplay so successful to me was the fact that they gave you more options in how to deal with a situation. You can be as gun-ho or as stealthy as you like, either way works well. I prefered to play stealthy and found the controls to be absolutely fine. Plus if I got caught then I could at least have some fun mowing down enemies. I can think of few games that manage to juggle multiple styles of play and make then all satisfying like MGS4 did.
