I think I might need someone to walk me through this whole thing. I downloaded it and made a map. It's craploads bigger than what you have about the same size as what you have, although it's hard to tell. This is about all I've managed so far. I don't know if a map that big is good or bad for a beginner.

Pfft, I'm staying deep inside the Glacial Home. No Zombie Elephant will be getting me.

Maybe it's me, maybe it's the tileset that Psy showed me to use but I don't get dwarf fortress even with the guide.

If you want to play without tiles at first be my guest but I don't think it'll make it any easier.

    What, specifically, don't you get?

A whole lot about the game it would seem, I need to properly spend some time reading up on it and then try again I guess. That or admit I fail at DF which Psy knows is never an option when I'm involved, failure is not in my vocabulary.

    ichigo

The first year is up! I passed the game to Necronopticous!

It turns out that the area I showed you earlier has an aquifer, but I found another area like it, minus the brook, so I embarked there instead!

These are the dwarves I started out with:

    1. Loony BoB (Miner, Blacksmith)
    2. ShlupQuack (Miner, Wrestler)
    3. Christmas (Swordsdwarf)
    4. Marshall Banana (Brewer, Cook)
    5. Evastio (Carpenter, Wood Cutter)
    6. Momiji (Mason)
    7. I Took the Red Pill (Farmer)

I added Evastio because I wanted a Carpenter and no one in this thread wanted to be one!

    + + +

    Our magma:

    -

Loony BoB is a miner, because I didn't have an anvil for his workshop. Mining made him really tough! ShlupieQuacker, too!

    -

Not long after embarking, I got this message:

But things soon took a tragic turn for Momiji and his new master. =(

I didn't see what happened, but shortly after...

    Is that fire?!

Fire Imps are to blame. They did this and killed your master, Momiji.

    -

In good news, two of us have found romance!

Christmas x I Took the Red Pill.

    -

By the way, I wasn't sure how you guys would feel about living with Evastio, so I built a room for him outside, away from our rooms. Apparently, that was a bad idea.

    !!!

    !!!

A werewolf took out Evastio and chased I Took the Red Pill around until it was killed by one of our traps. You can see dead Evastio and fleeing Red Pill here:

    -

Everyone else is safe and lived through the first year. We're growing strawberries, brewing strawberry wine, and we have a really cute dining area!

No migrants at all. Kind of a boring year.

Oh that's harsh losing the woodsman in a forest.

    What is the fortress's name?

I've started messing around with DF now and I think I've vaguely got the hang of it, although I still have much to learn. I went for magma, too, and lost three dwarves to those damned imps. Urrrrrgh. Most of the time they were off grabbing the items that the first dead dwarf dropped. And apparently hunting in this game means chasing any kind of animal right past the fire imp, ignoring him and ending up dead while you continue to chase said animal. Urgh.

Haha yeah you gotta watch out for "hey this dead guy's shoe is awesome better go get it" syndrome. Best thing to do is to forbid all of their .

And yeah I dunno if a hunter would specifically target a fire imp. I mean, I guess they might if the imp was close to them, but once they're locked onto any sort of critter, they're away. Even if they run out of crossbow bolts. Honestly, I think Hunters have a higher mortality rate than any other job!

    LOSING IS FUN.

BTW, did you make Evastio die on purpose on something?
